Pittsburgh Ballet Stages Impressive Recovery

The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, which recently emerged from years of orchestral discord and financial woes, will continue its rebirth with season openers at Wolf Trap and Hartwood Acres.
Executive director Harris Ferris and board members spearheaded efforts to bring about a return to live music, staff changes and a modified marketing plan that resulted in many sold-out performances last season.
Changes among dancers this season include the promotions of soloists Kumiko Tsuji and Christopher Budzinkski to principal dancers, and the absences of Daisuke Takeuchi, Jilia Erickson and Alan Obuzor for varying periods.
Corps members Robert Curti, Michelle Joy, Kimberly Tasota and Brienne Wiltsie have left, while new members include Robert Moore of Pennsylvania and Luca Sbrizzi of Italy.
The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre opens its 2007-08 season tomorrow, performing George Balanchine's Theme and Variations at the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia, with a repeat performance on August 23 at Pittsburgh's Hartwood Acres.
